Dr. Terry Rose, Smile In Style

A common form of restorative care is tooth replacement using the dental bridge. Dental bridges are an affordable option for many people. They are designed to restore efficient chewing and create a lovely smile. Our team has treated patients from Melbourne, Sunbury, Moonee Ponds, and beyond with great success. Before care, we discuss choices in materials for a dental bridge as well as types of dental bridges and the life expectancy of this restorative process. These days we try avoid using metals in our restorations and bridgework. So we usually use Emax and Zirconia in our bridge designs.

A dental bridge is a singular fixture with three or more “teeth.” Two of these teeth will be beautiful, durable dental crowns. In between these crowns will be one or more artificial teeth, called pontics. When the teeth on either side of the gap are fitted with the dental crowns, the artificial tooth or teeth will be stabilized in between. It will rest on top of the gums.

In order to craft a dental bridge, we must first prepare the two “anchor” teeth which will be crowned. In order to achieve the ideal bite and function, these teeth will be shortened and narrowed to accommodate their crowns. After preparation, digital impressions using our Cerec Omnicam will be taken to create a model of the new dentition, or tooth shapes. From the digital models and bite registration, the dental bridge can be precisely made. The final product can be ready for placement in a couple of days. Where there are multiple missing teeth implants can also be placed to anchor bridges.

Today, there are several methods of restoring teeth. Each person is different and in the Smile in Style office, is treated with personalised care that meets individual needs. Some patients may choose to replace missing teeth with dental implants, which are inserted into the jawbone to mimic natural teeth roots. There are certain requirements for successful implant treatment, however, and not every person finds this solution capable of meeting their desired result. Implant treatment is usually a more expensive option than bridgework but does have an advantage of not having to crown (cut down) the teeth either side of the missing tooth/teeth.

Implants and any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. We will discuss the risks of the procedure during your consultation as well as examine your health to ensure you are a suitable candidate for implants. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Missing teeth may also be replaced with a partial denture. A partial denture does have the advantage of being removable, which makes cleaning of the missing tooth/teeth site easier. It is also a considerably cheaper option than bridgework and implants. However, this removable appliance is typically best as a temporary fix. Many patients find the partial denture option more cumbersome and less comfortable than the fixed options of implants and bridgework.

Safe Amalgam Removal Protocol

  • Chlorella drink prior is given prior to treatment and a mouth rinse post-treatment. Chlorella can help bind and prevent mercury absorption.
  • Physical protective barriers - Masks, protective coverings, eyewear, in-mouth non-latex dental dams, and other steps are taken to prevent physical contact with mercury for the patient and staff.
  • Oral evacuation - Generous amounts of water are used to continuously rinse particulate matter from the mouth while suctioning it away. Combined with protective dental dams, this prevents patients from swallowing dental amalgam particles during treatment. Additionally, the rinsing helps lower the temperature of the filling, reducing the amount of mercury vapour released.
  • External air - A continuous supply of non-contaminated air or oxygen is delivered via a mask or similar apparatus, preventing inhalation of mercury vapour or particles.
  • "Chunk it out" method - Rather than using a drill to grind the filling down, it is carefully removed in the largest possible pieces, minimising friction, vaporisation.
  • High Volume Evacuation Suction is used by the dental assistant to remove amalgam particles in the mouth.
  • High Volume Air suction and Air Purifiers are used in the clinical room that is able to remove mercury vapour from the room.
  • Amalgam separator use - This device collects mercury-contaminated waste before it can enter the sewage system, allowing us to dispose of it safely.
