See a cosmetic dentist for teeth whitening in the Melbourne area

Teeth whitening is among the most popular and most frequently requested dental treatments in the Melbourne area. If you’ve never tried professional whitening, you might wonder why you need a dentist. After all, there is a virtually endless variety of do-it-yourself products lining the store shelves. What many people do not realise is that professional treatment is faster, safer, and more effective.

Teeth whitening safety

When done properly, teeth whitening is a safe and gentle treatment. However, there are risks associated with the use of over the counter products if they are used without consulting a dentist. Whitening materials are designed for tooth enamel. If you have cavities, fractures, or other damage, the material may reach inner layers of the tooth, possibly even contacting the nerve. Additionally, the product may burn or irritate your gums and other soft tissues in your mouth. Whitening trays which are provided by a dentist are customised for an ideal fit.

They specifically designed to prevent the whitening material from leaking out if they do not fit properly.

Effectiveness

Retail whitening products are milder than those provided by a dentist. Many formulas boast the same active ingredients that dentists use. However, much like over the counter medicine as compared to prescriptions, the strength of those ingredients is much lower. Therefore, the results are less dramatic than a professional whitening treatment by a dentist.

Taking dental whitening to a new level

At Smile In Style, we are selective with all products we use. Even among professional teeth whitening systems, there are vast differences in the patient experience and results. Some dentists use an “activation light,” which yields (very temporary) results and tends to dry the tooth enamel. Some products include ingredients to soothe sensitivity and painful “zingers.” We have only found one system that achieves whitening without dehydrating the enamel. It uses a formula that actually helps prevent sensitivity, works on tetracycline stains, and yields dramatic, long lasting results. Only the KöR Whitening meets our standards of patient comfort, customisation, and reliable results. The added benefit of this system is that once you have your whitening splints made for you, you can maintain a beautiful white smile for as long as you want. Simply use it once a month to keep your teeth looking white.

Safe Amalgam Removal Protocol

  • Chlorella drink prior is given prior to treatment and a mouth rinse post-treatment. Chlorella can help bind and prevent mercury absorption.
  • Physical protective barriers - Masks, protective coverings, eyewear, in-mouth non-latex dental dams, and other steps are taken to prevent physical contact with mercury for the patient and staff.
  • Oral evacuation - Generous amounts of water are used to continuously rinse particulate matter from the mouth while suctioning it away. Combined with protective dental dams, this prevents patients from swallowing dental amalgam particles during treatment. Additionally, the rinsing helps lower the temperature of the filling, reducing the amount of mercury vapour released.
  • External air - A continuous supply of non-contaminated air or oxygen is delivered via a mask or similar apparatus, preventing inhalation of mercury vapour or particles.
  • "Chunk it out" method - Rather than using a drill to grind the filling down, it is carefully removed in the largest possible pieces, minimising friction, vaporisation.
  • High Volume Evacuation Suction is used by the dental assistant to remove amalgam particles in the mouth.
  • High Volume Air suction and Air Purifiers are used in the clinical room that is able to remove mercury vapour from the room.
  • Amalgam separator use - This device collects mercury-contaminated waste before it can enter the sewage system, allowing us to dispose of it safely.
