At home care combined with professional Dental Hygiene Services in Sunbury keep your smile bright

Though we may not spend a lot of time contemplating the state of our oral health, most people have an unspoken desire to keep their smile bright and healthy. We hear so much about the cosmetic aspects of the smile on television and in magazines that it is easy to get caught up in this, forgetting that the foundations of a beautiful smile includes healthy teeth and gums.

Dental Hygiene Services from dentist in Sunbury

Smile In Style in Sunbury and Moonee Ponds offers cosmetic and dental hygiene services in our offices. We understand the importance of an attractive smile, but also work with patients of all ages to facilitate the successful care of teeth and gums so that above all, the smile remains healthy and you remain healthy. The link between oral health and general wellbeing is now well documented.

Like most dental services, hygiene is an area in which care is tailored to each patient. Following a consultation with our Smile In Style Dentist, you will be referred to see a hygienist. During your initial visit, our skilled hygienist will do a complete mouth check of your gum levels as this will give us a baseline of your gum health. Often a Diagnodent laser will be used to detect decay in the grooves of the teeth and she will work together with your dentist to advise you of any areas of concern.

Then she will do a thorough clean of all of your teeth above and below the gums, removing all plaque, calculus and staining. This cleaning process is completed with the use of an ultrasonic scaler, hand instruments, flossing and polishing of your teeth.

Finally she will provide you with personalised oral hygiene instructions designed to meet your personal needs. Including brushing, flossing and oral health products. A normal preventative care visit to the hygienist will take between 45-60 minutes and will assist in the prevention of periodontal disease.

The Link between Oral Health and General Health:

  • Periodontal Disease is inflammation around the teeth caused by a build-up of plaque and tartar.
  • Periodontal Disease increases inflammation in the body.
  • Periodontal Disease stresses the body’s immune system and lowers resistance to infections.
  • Research has found that Periodontal Disease increases the risk and severity of Heart Disease, Stroke, Diabetes, Respiratory Disease, Cancers, Osteoporosis, Premature Labour and Digestive Disorders.
  • It is vital to your overall health to have regular preventative care appointments with your hygienist.

Why the Maintenance of Oral Health is a group effort.

True oral health is not a given, it is something that we need to work at on a daily basis. To experience on going oral health takes time and effort, but you are not alone. The dentist at Smile In Style and our skilled hygiene team are happy to discuss your concerns, offer support, educate you on the prevention of periodontal disease and demonstrate ways in which your home care practices can be improved for a healthier smile.

Because your dentist and hygienist get a different view of your teeth than you do, we can see areas that may not be getting the right amount of attention when you brush and floss. During your visits in our Sunbury or Moonee Ponds office, we can determine the necessity for new brushing or flossing techniques, or the benefit that may come from new hygiene tools. Every person is different in his or her abilities to achieve maximum results with standard hygiene practices. Some may find greater effect with an electric toothbrush, the use of tooth mousse or even through the practice of oil pulling with coconut oil. By discussing your oral health needs and challenges with us at Smile In Style, we can help you become better equipped to manage your oral health successfully between visits.

We want you to enjoy a healthy, attractive smile so contact Smile in Style for your next preventative care appointment.

Safe Amalgam Removal Protocol

  • Chlorella drink prior is given prior to treatment and a mouth rinse post-treatment. Chlorella can help bind and prevent mercury absorption.
  • Physical protective barriers - Masks, protective coverings, eyewear, in-mouth non-latex dental dams, and other steps are taken to prevent physical contact with mercury for the patient and staff.
  • Oral evacuation - Generous amounts of water are used to continuously rinse particulate matter from the mouth while suctioning it away. Combined with protective dental dams, this prevents patients from swallowing dental amalgam particles during treatment. Additionally, the rinsing helps lower the temperature of the filling, reducing the amount of mercury vapour released.
  • External air - A continuous supply of non-contaminated air or oxygen is delivered via a mask or similar apparatus, preventing inhalation of mercury vapour or particles.
  • "Chunk it out" method - Rather than using a drill to grind the filling down, it is carefully removed in the largest possible pieces, minimising friction, vaporisation.
  • High Volume Evacuation Suction is used by the dental assistant to remove amalgam particles in the mouth.
  • High Volume Air suction and Air Purifiers are used in the clinical room that is able to remove mercury vapour from the room.
  • Amalgam separator use - This device collects mercury-contaminated waste before it can enter the sewage system, allowing us to dispose of it safely.
