Finding good health from your Holistic Dentist in Moonee Ponds

Your body is a complete system, and whole health involves optimal health of every part. Unfortunately, the conventional approach to dentistry often fails to recognise this. If you would like a dentist who is interested in your overall well being instead of simply repairing teeth, then Smile in Style is the practice for you. We now know that your oral health impacts on your whole health and quality of life in more ways than you might imagine.

Periodontal health

In recent years, a wealth of scientific research has confirmed this connection. Periodontal disease has been linked to increased rates of heart disease, stroke, pre-term births, arthritis, diabetes, and many other seemingly unrelated conditions. Researchers have yet to prove the cause of the connection, but it is believed to be related to systemic inflammation.

Infection triggers a response from the immune system that included inflammation. This is harmless when the infection is temporary. However, chronic infection such as periodontal disease can lead to systemic inflammation, affecting your entire body.

Dental materials

What your dentist puts in your mouth is important. Any fine particles caused by wear and tear or vapours emitted are likely to go straight to your stomach or lungs, and on to your bloodstream. Therefore, we use the most natural and non-toxic materials available. Our office is mercury-free and we are committed to patient health, the health of our staff and the environment.

Medical conditions

The mouth-body connection goes both ways. For example, chronic inflammatory diseases such as diabetes increase your risk of gum disease, and may require special preventive care. Dry mouth, which may be a side effect of certain medications, can increase your risk of cavities and gum disease. Our patient consultations include a discussion about the state of your overall health, and your dental care is tailored accordingly.

These are just a few examples of the ways in which your oral health can affect your general well being. Why not find out for yourself what a difference holistic dentistry can make? Call us at 03 8400 4104 (Moonee Ponds) or 03 8001 6021 (Sunbury) and schedule a consultation today.

Safe Amalgam Removal Protocol

  • Chlorella drink prior is given prior to treatment and a mouth rinse post-treatment. Chlorella can help bind and prevent mercury absorption.
  • Physical protective barriers - Masks, protective coverings, eyewear, in-mouth non-latex dental dams, and other steps are taken to prevent physical contact with mercury for the patient and staff.
  • Oral evacuation - Generous amounts of water are used to continuously rinse particulate matter from the mouth while suctioning it away. Combined with protective dental dams, this prevents patients from swallowing dental amalgam particles during treatment. Additionally, the rinsing helps lower the temperature of the filling, reducing the amount of mercury vapour released.
  • External air - A continuous supply of non-contaminated air or oxygen is delivered via a mask or similar apparatus, preventing inhalation of mercury vapour or particles.
  • "Chunk it out" method - Rather than using a drill to grind the filling down, it is carefully removed in the largest possible pieces, minimising friction, vaporisation.
  • High Volume Evacuation Suction is used by the dental assistant to remove amalgam particles in the mouth.
  • High Volume Air suction and Air Purifiers are used in the clinical room that is able to remove mercury vapour from the room.
  • Amalgam separator use - This device collects mercury-contaminated waste before it can enter the sewage system, allowing us to dispose of it safely.
