Kids can feel good about seeing their family dentist near Melbourne

People of all ages deserve to have positive experiences when they visit the dentist. Far too often, we hear stories from adults who avoided seeing the dentist for years due to unpleasant experiences in childhood. It makes sense that children can feel somewhat anxious when visiting the family dentist. With regular dental care from our experienced dental team, children from the Melbourne area and beyond can actually look forward to dental visits.

Our goal is to provide outstanding care to children and their families. If your child has been apprehensive about dental care, realise that you play an integral role in the development of better dental experiences. Suggestions to help your child feel more comfortable include:

  • Take steps to feel good about the dentist you have chosen for your child’s dental care. When you are calm and relaxed, your child is more confident entering new situations. We welcome families to stop by and visit our office before dental treatment is needed.
  • Children should not be surprised by dental visits. They deserve to know what to expect in general terms, such as “we are going to see your dentist, who will look at your teeth.” Details of dental treatment are best provided by our experienced team who knows how to simplify procedures.
  • Parents are encouraged to talk about dental visits in a positive light, not stating that seeing the dentist is scary or painful. Sharing your unpleasant dental experiences certainly will not help your child feel less anxious. Even telling a child “it won’t hurt” to have dental treatment can be tricky because the young mind may stick on the work “hurt.”
  • The more children know about oral health and what it takes to keep teeth healthy, the better they can feel about seeing the dentist. We are happy to educate our young patients and their parents so they look forward to each visit.

Our team, at Smile In Style is warm and welcoming to all of our patients. We are happy to explain each step of the dental examination and any treatment that they might need. We also use state-of-the-art technology in our offices. We use Diagnodent lasers to detect decay early in grooves, pits and fissures in back teeth. We use air abrasion and lasers to fill pits fissures and grooves with small white fillings which conserve tooth structure. These filling procedures can usually be achieved without the need for local anaesthetic.

For families who receive that Tax Benefit A, their children aged 2-17 are eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Scheme of $1,000 of government covered dental treatment over a 2 year period. Usually families will receive a letter informing them of their child’s eligibility for dental cover under the scheme. Feel free to contact us to schedule an appointment for a checkup and clean if you have received one of these letters. If you are unsure if your child is covered under the Child Dental Benefits Scheme it is relatively easy for us to check at our offices. We just need the numbers on your family Medicare card.

Safe Amalgam Removal Protocol

  • Chlorella drink prior is given prior to treatment and a mouth rinse post-treatment. Chlorella can help bind and prevent mercury absorption.
  • Physical protective barriers - Masks, protective coverings, eyewear, in-mouth non-latex dental dams, and other steps are taken to prevent physical contact with mercury for the patient and staff.
  • Oral evacuation - Generous amounts of water are used to continuously rinse particulate matter from the mouth while suctioning it away. Combined with protective dental dams, this prevents patients from swallowing dental amalgam particles during treatment. Additionally, the rinsing helps lower the temperature of the filling, reducing the amount of mercury vapour released.
  • External air - A continuous supply of non-contaminated air or oxygen is delivered via a mask or similar apparatus, preventing inhalation of mercury vapour or particles.
  • "Chunk it out" method - Rather than using a drill to grind the filling down, it is carefully removed in the largest possible pieces, minimising friction, vaporisation.
  • High Volume Evacuation Suction is used by the dental assistant to remove amalgam particles in the mouth.
  • High Volume Air suction and Air Purifiers are used in the clinical room that is able to remove mercury vapour from the room.
  • Amalgam separator use - This device collects mercury-contaminated waste before it can enter the sewage system, allowing us to dispose of it safely.
