Enhancing smiles, supporting oral health with fixed braces

Orthodontic treatment with fixed braces, clear aligners, and other appliances can transform your smile and improve your overall health. Smile in Style prioritises these treatments. Drs Terry Rose and Meenakshi Rajcoomer, along with their team, have advanced training in orthodontic treatment through Progressive Orthodontic Seminars (POS). Rest assured that our teams in Sunbury and Moonee Ponds, Victoria, have the skills and experience to diagnose and treat misalignment with appropriate oral appliances for you and/or your child.

What happens if I don’t treat crowded or misaligned teeth?

For full functionality, our teeth, joints, muscles, and jawbone must all work together in harmony. When the teeth are not properly aligned, it can lead to numerous issues aside from the cosmetic ones. Imbalances can cause painful chewing, chronic headaches, jaw pain, and other Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) symptoms, and many more issues that only get worse or become more frequent without proper treatment. Additionally, when teeth overlap or are spaced too far apart, it provides an ideal environment for harmful bacteria to multiply. When teeth are not properly positioned, they can be challenging to clean, and inadequate oral hygiene is the biggest risk factor for tooth decay and gum disease.

Are there other ways to straighten teeth?

Dr Rose and Dr Meenakshi consider orthodontic treatment as the best way to straighten teeth. Instead of using crowns or veneers to fix gaps or other spacing issues, we can properly align the teeth without cutting away tooth structure. Your teeth are wholly preserved and when paired with professional bleaching, orthodontic treatment can provide a better, healthier, and more affordable result than crowns or veneers.

How early can braces be started?

While adults and children alike can benefit from braces or appliances, Orthodontics Australia recommends that paediatric patients undergo an assessment between the ages of 7 and 10. This allows for qualified professionals like Drs Rose and Rajcoomer to evaluate your child’s teeth when they still have mixed dentition – both baby and adult teeth. Our doctors can assess developing problems and recommend early interventions that may help your child avoid the need for orthodontic treatment later in life. We have also invested in new POS software to predict future growth accurately. With early orthodontic assessment and treatment, we can avoid further problems and correct issues when the jawbones are still soft and pliable. Corrective procedures at this stage may work faster and more effectively when combined with the normal growth of the child.

What options are available for braces?

At Smile In Style, we offer expansion devices for children who have narrow jaws when they are still growing. They may or may not then need braces. Should they need their teeth further straightened, traditional fixed metal braces may be appropriate for patients who need more complex teeth movement. For simpler cases that only require movement of a few teeth, clear aligner therapy maybe the preferred option. The starting point is to come in and have a consultation with our dentists to work out the best option for you.

We offer the full spectrum of orthodontic treatment, from correcting minor spacing issues with clear aligners to treating severe jaw-related issues with oral surgery or orthodontic skeletal anchorage (pins placed in the bone). Our advanced orthodontic training allows us to provide you and your family with a complete range of treatment options. To find out more, schedule an assessment at Smile in Style. Safe Amalgam Removal Protocol

  • Chlorella drink prior is given prior to treatment and a mouth rinse post-treatment. Chlorella can help bind and prevent mercury absorption.
  • Physical protective barriers - Masks, protective coverings, eyewear, in-mouth non-latex dental dams, and other steps are taken to prevent physical contact with mercury for the patient and staff.
  • Oral evacuation - Generous amounts of water are used to continuously rinse particulate matter from the mouth while suctioning it away. Combined with protective dental dams, this prevents patients from swallowing dental amalgam particles during treatment. Additionally, the rinsing helps lower the temperature of the filling, reducing the amount of mercury vapour released.
  • External air - A continuous supply of non-contaminated air or oxygen is delivered via a mask or similar apparatus, preventing inhalation of mercury vapour or particles.
  • "Chunk it out" method - Rather than using a drill to grind the filling down, it is carefully removed in the largest possible pieces, minimising friction, vaporisation.
  • High Volume Evacuation Suction is used by the dental assistant to remove amalgam particles in the mouth.
  • High Volume Air suction and Air Purifiers are used in the clinical room that is able to remove mercury vapour from the room.
  • Amalgam separator use - This device collects mercury-contaminated waste before it can enter the sewage system, allowing us to dispose of it safely.
