What are general dental services?

General dental services cover a broad spectrum of treatments aimed at preventing and managing common oral health issues. These services include routine check-ups, professional teeth cleaning, oral health assessments, fillings, and more. Regular visits allow us to catch small problems early and help you maintain optimal oral health.

Why are regular dental check-ups important?

A regular dental check-up is one of the most important things you can do for your oral health. Our team examines your teeth, gums, and mouth for signs of decay, gum disease, or other potential issues. By detecting problems early, we can treat them before they require more complex or costly procedures.

How frequently should I visit the dentist?

We recommend that most patients visit the dentist every six months for a check-up and professional cleaning. However, you may require more frequent visits depending on your oral health. We will provide a tailored plan to suit your unique dental needs.

What is included in a dental cleaning?

A dental cleaning is a separate preventive procedure that is done by our qualified Oral Health Therapists and Dental Hygienists. They take around an hour and will talk to you about your current home care routine and will then assess your gum health. They will remove any plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth, remove surface stains, polish your teeth and ensure that you can floss easily. This will help you to maintain a fresh and healthy smile. We also use Ozonated water during the dental cleaning procedure which helps to kill viruses, bacteria and microorganisms that may cause gum disease. This appointment is also a great opportunity to ask questions about your oral health or your at home oral care routine.

Can regular dental services help prevent gum disease?

Yes! Routine general dental visits will help us identify the early signs of gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to serious oral health issues. By seeing you regularly, we can monitor your gum health for any periodontal pocketing, bleeding or infection. We can diagnose and treat problems by removing any built up tartar often before it develops into a bigger problem like periodontal disease.

Do general dental services include cosmetic treatments?

While general dental services primarily focus on maintaining and preventing oral health, they often overlap with cosmetic treatments. Options like dental bonding or whitening may be available at Smile in Style as part of a customised dental treatment plan to improve your smile, dental health and your appearance.

Safe Amalgam Removal Protocol

  • Chlorella drink prior is given prior to treatment and a mouth rinse post-treatment. Chlorella can help bind and prevent mercury absorption.
  • Physical protective barriers - Masks, protective coverings, eyewear, in-mouth non-latex dental dams, and other steps are taken to prevent physical contact with mercury for the patient and staff.
  • Oral evacuation - Generous amounts of water are used to continuously rinse particulate matter from the mouth while suctioning it away. Combined with protective dental dams, this prevents patients from swallowing dental amalgam particles during treatment. Additionally, the rinsing helps lower the temperature of the filling, reducing the amount of mercury vapour released.
  • External air - A continuous supply of non-contaminated air or oxygen is delivered via a mask or similar apparatus, preventing inhalation of mercury vapour or particles.
  • "Chunk it out" method - Rather than using a drill to grind the filling down, it is carefully removed in the largest possible pieces, minimising friction, vaporisation.
  • High Volume Evacuation Suction is used by the dental assistant to remove amalgam particles in the mouth.
  • High Volume Air suction and Air Purifiers are used in the clinical room that is able to remove mercury vapour from the room.
  • Amalgam separator use - This device collects mercury-contaminated waste before it can enter the sewage system, allowing us to dispose of it safely.
