How Holistic Root Canal Therapy Preserves Damaged Teeth

Smile in Style has rooms in Moonee Ponds and Sunbury, Victoria, and we work with patients to preserve their natural teeth by using the latest techniques and technologies in Dentistry. Holistic root canal therapy can assist in preserving a tooth, which is important for overall oral health. Losing a tooth can cause other teeth to shift in toward the space. It can also cause an unstable bite and loss of facial profile, and it can be challenging to eat foods. Losing a tooth can also increase the risk of gum disease and tooth decay. Root canal therapy can help to preserve even badly damaged teeth.

Why would I need root canal treatment?

At the centre of each tooth is a soft tissue called dental pulp. It is made up of nerves, blood vessels and other cells that keep the tooth alive. If a tooth has deep decay, bacteria can get into the dental pulp and cause an infection. When this happens, the nerve is irritated, and patients may experience intense pain. Complications of deep decay include an infection or abscess in the jawbone. Root canal therapy is an effective treatment for an infection or abscess.

What is root canal treatment?

The procedure is divided into three parts:

  1. The inflamed or diseased pulp is removed.
  2. We carefully clean and shape the inside of the tooth using a dental Laser and Ozonated water to kill all bacteria.
  3. A filling material is applied to seal the space and protect the treated tooth.

Afterwards, as the blood supply of the tooth has been removed, the tooth can become more brittle. To protect and strengthen the vulnerable tooth and underlying tooth structure, we restore the tooth with a dental crown or another full-coverage restoration. For this step, we often wait three months before placing the crown to ensure the root canal is stable.

How do you perform root canal therapy as a holistic dental practice?

We use an advanced Dental Laser system and Ozonated water to thoroughly clean the inside of the tooth. Ozonated water is a natural way to kill viruses, bacteria, fungi, and mould. The Fotona LightWalker® laser never touches the tooth. It uses special SWEEPS® technology, which sends ultra-short pulses from the laser to generate sound or pressure waves to effectively clean the inside of the tooth. This energy effectively disinfects even the most narrow root canals to reduce the risk of persistent infection.

Why is it important to clean the tooth so well?

If bacteria and other germs are left behind, the tooth may not heal, and an abscess may form under the tooth. When underlying damage and infection persist, the tooth will likely need to be extracted. Smile in Style performs holistic root canal therapy, which minimises the risk of treatment failures by effectively and thoroughly cleaning the root canals.

What is the “success rate” for root canal therapy?

Treatment largely has a success rate of 90% to 95%. Using Ozonated water and Dental Lasers increases the chance of success. Once the final crown is placed, you can expect many trouble-free years, provided you take good care of your teeth and gums. We always recommend six monthly dental checkups to ensure that problems are detected early. Safe Amalgam Removal Protocol

  • Chlorella drink prior is given prior to treatment and a mouth rinse post-treatment. Chlorella can help bind and prevent mercury absorption.
  • Physical protective barriers - Masks, protective coverings, eyewear, in-mouth non-latex dental dams, and other steps are taken to prevent physical contact with mercury for the patient and staff.
  • Oral evacuation - Generous amounts of water are used to continuously rinse particulate matter from the mouth while suctioning it away. Combined with protective dental dams, this prevents patients from swallowing dental amalgam particles during treatment. Additionally, the rinsing helps lower the temperature of the filling, reducing the amount of mercury vapour released.
  • External air - A continuous supply of non-contaminated air or oxygen is delivered via a mask or similar apparatus, preventing inhalation of mercury vapour or particles.
  • "Chunk it out" method - Rather than using a drill to grind the filling down, it is carefully removed in the largest possible pieces, minimising friction, vaporisation.
  • High Volume Evacuation Suction is used by the dental assistant to remove amalgam particles in the mouth.
  • High Volume Air suction and Air Purifiers are used in the clinical room that is able to remove mercury vapour from the room.
  • Amalgam separator use - This device collects mercury-contaminated waste before it can enter the sewage system, allowing us to dispose of it safely.
