The importance of dental hygiene services in Monee Ponds
At Smile in Style we believe that the health of your mouth has a direct effect on the health of your body. We also believe that preventing dental issues from occurring is as important as restoring oral health or cosmetic issues. Many patients only think about the health of their mouth when they have a problem – a sore tooth, gums that are swollen, or a smile that doesn’t sparkle anymore. In fact, with proper oral health habits, many of these problems can be prevented in the first place.
Dr. Terry Rose has designed an entire department of his practice that is dedicated to helping patients keep their mouths healthy and their smiles sparkling. The Hygiene Dentistry department consists not only of trained and highly skilled dental hygienists, but also a dental therapist. This team provides the following services:
- Cleaning and polishing: Even with excellent at home dental habits, the twice annual dental check-up is a critical part of your overall health and wellbeing. Very tiny food particles can easily become stuck on the surface of the tooth, especially on those hard to reach areas such as between the teeth and in the back of the mouth. Left alone, the food particles turn into plaque and tartar and can cause decay, gum disease, bad breath, and many other health problems. During your check-up the hygienist will remove food particles, plaque, and tartar to ensure the health of your mouth. Furthermore, we keep detailed records of each visit so that we know how your oral health has improved or declined from visit to visit.
- Gum health assessment: Your gums are a critical part of your overall health as they not only support the teeth but also share a blood supply with the rest of your body. Gum disease is a condition that affects the gums when bacteria settle below the gum line. Left untreated this can cause bad breath and sore gums at first, but over time, the condition worsens and can lead to tooth loss. Research has also proven the link between gum disease and the incidence of heart disease, stroke, cancers, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and premature births. The Smile in Style team will examine the mouth for any pockets where gum disease could begin and develop a treatment plan to ensure that the gums remain healthy and you remain healthy.
- Oral health education: The services that happen in the Smile in Style office are only part of the equation when it comes to your dental health. Patients must also take a proactive approach to their oral health by ensuring good habits at home. The Smile in Style hygienists work to educate each patient about the importance of brushing, flossing, and maintaining a healthy diet.
- Deep pockets which remain after the cleaning done by the hygienist and which are also associated with higher disease risk can be earmarked for optional treatment with our new Lightwalker ATS dental laser. This laser is more effective at cleaning the deeper root surfaces, removing diseased tissue and killing bacteria. This leaves the way open for better healing/ reduced inflammation/ reduced pocket depth and reduced health risks. This treatment is also effective at treating periodontal disease around dental implants. For more information please see:
