From detecting cavities to treating gum disease, laser-assisted dentistry does it all

Use of modern technology is second nature to the team at Smile In Style.  Our highly experienced dentists in our Sunbury and Moonee Ponds offices have been using laser technology to complement many different types of conventional dental treatments for decades.

Laser Periodontal Therapy in Sunbury VIC Area

Laser-assisted dentistry has many  benefits for patients. It promotes the safest and most comfortable treatment experience while also supporting optimal outcomes and the fastest treatment process.

Additionally, laser dentistry is versatile. From treating periodontal (gum) disease,  to disinfecting root canals in root canal therapy and also removing cavities, the Lightwalker® laser system by Fotona is an effective way to treat a range of dental conditions. Our dentists, led by Dr. Terry Rose can even use a special laser, the KAVO DIAGNOdent™  and DIAGNOcam, to accurately and non-invasively detect tooth decay at its earliest stages. This promotes proactive and conservative, tissue-preserving dentistry, which ultimately saves you, the patient, money.

We can customise patient treatment with the Lightwalker® laser system. Together, these features support precision therapy and numerous patient benefits.

They include:

  • Completing the removal of cavities which is extremely well-tolerated by patients and often without the use of numbing local anaesthetic. As we do not have to wait for the anaesthetic to take effect, procedures can be completed quickly, and comfortably.
  • Common triggers for dental fear, such as injections for local anaesthetic, are often avoided. So, we are able to help anxious patients feel safe and get them back in the treatment chair to improve their oral and overall health.
  • We rarely use cutting instruments like scalpels so, unwanted side effects like bleeding are minimised.
  • Due to the conservative nature of laser dental treatment, we can also reduce the risk of complications like pain and swelling post surgical treatment. This light-touch approach supports fast and healthy healing.
  • The dental laser can also be used to disinfect gums in periodontal treatment which assists in the reduction of gum disease.
  • We can disinfect root canals using the Lightwalker® SWEEPS approach which improves the irrigation and disinfecting process of  Root Canal Therapy, increasing success rates.
  • Laser light can also be used to reduce snoring and improve sleep quality.  This procedure is called Nightlase Therapy.  The dental laser light is shone at the back of the mouth and palate to increase the formation of collagen.  This in turn tightens the loose tissues, reducing snoring.
  • We can also direct a low level laser light to a handpiece that delivers therapeutic light energy to targeted tissues to assist with post treatment healing and reduce pain. This is particularly good following implant placement or extractions.

    Safe Amalgam Removal Protocol

    • Chlorella drink prior is given prior to treatment and a mouth rinse post-treatment. Chlorella can help bind and prevent mercury absorption.
    • Physical protective barriers - Masks, protective coverings, eyewear, in-mouth non-latex dental dams, and other steps are taken to prevent physical contact with mercury for the patient and staff.
    • Oral evacuation - Generous amounts of water are used to continuously rinse particulate matter from the mouth while suctioning it away. Combined with protective dental dams, this prevents patients from swallowing dental amalgam particles during treatment. Additionally, the rinsing helps lower the temperature of the filling, reducing the amount of mercury vapour released.
    • External air - A continuous supply of non-contaminated air or oxygen is delivered via a mask or similar apparatus, preventing inhalation of mercury vapour or particles.
    • "Chunk it out" method - Rather than using a drill to grind the filling down, it is carefully removed in the largest possible pieces, minimising friction, vaporisation.
    • High Volume Evacuation Suction is used by the dental assistant to remove amalgam particles in the mouth.
    • High Volume Air suction and Air Purifiers are used in the clinical room that is able to remove mercury vapour from the room.
    • Amalgam separator use - This device collects mercury-contaminated waste before it can enter the sewage system, allowing us to dispose of it safely.
